The Bodhisattvacarayavatara (The
Bodhisattva’s way of life) is one of the most illustrious and renowned Mahayana
classics. In particular, the 9th chapter, which elucidates the meaning of the Transcendent
Wisdom of Emptiness, lies at the very heart of all Buddhist practice and
realization. Shantideva himself says in the very first verse of this chapter:
“This entire preparation the Sage taught for the sake of wisdom. Thus, one
wishing to bring an end to suffering should develop wisdom.”
This text opens our understanding of relative and absolute
truth, or emptiness. It clarifies deep rooted personal and philosophical
misunderstandings we may have about the Middle Way or Madhyamika teachings through
its progressive examination and refutation of all the philosophical approaches
to existence and non-existence, as well as the relationship of mind to
matter, leading up to totral, absolute truth beyond the four
extremes.
Rinpoche's teaching may refer to Kunzang Pelden's The
Nectar of Manjushri's Speech: A Detailed Commentary on Shantideva's Way
of the Bodhisattva, and we recommend that participant's bring a
copy in addition to the Bodhisattvacarayavatara.
